Western Influence on Indian culture and society
A Culture is the ideas, customs and social behavior of a particular people or society. Indian culture is an ancient culture and is one of the most popular cultures in the world. Western culture is a modern and advanced culture. The impact of Western culture on Indian culture is both a curse and boon on the Indian society.
In today's world, it is inevitable to adopt some aspects of Western culture. The world around us is evolving and developing day after day. We (Some of us, especially the older people) constantly complain about the slow development of our nation, and at the same time, also complain about the entry of Western culture into our culture. This leads us to a question: Is development possible following culture at the same time?
We have to accept the inference that development go hand in hand with Westernization. The more developed a place is, the more Westernized it is. Indian cities are perfect examples of this scenario. People living in these cities mostly follow Western culture, knowingly or unknowingly. Nuclear families, Open-mindedness, Feminism, Mechanical life etc. are some of the characteristics of Western culture as well as of these people living in cities. These cities are also models of the present villages in India.
Thus we are part of this process of evolution and we are the part of this generation that completely follows neither the ancient Indian culture nor the modern Western culture. Our women wear both; the traditional 'Sarees' and the Western 'Jeans and Tops', we enjoy both Samosas and Sandwiches, and we speak both English and our native tongue. Even though all these lie on the brighter side of the canvas, there's a darker side too and this darker side turns into serious havoc in the society. The ever-ending debates on Rape, Moral Policing, Love marriages, Lifestyle and even the attitudes of young people, are problems which are exclusive only in India. It is not only us that faces this dilemma in the society but the future generations may also be victims.
Culture is a behavioral pattern followed by a society, thus it is subject to change. This intermingling of Indian and Western culture may evolve into a new culture for the better or worse, but it is pretty obvious that the 'ancient' and 'modern' doesn't go along well. But, As nothing is permanent, everything is changing, thus time has the last answer to all our skeptic thoughts.
