Problem with our Education system
Finland, which already has one of the best education systems in the world is going to adapt a revolutionary change in its education system. Students in Finland will no more have subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Geography, Literature etc. in their academic curriculum unless they are interested in those topics.
"There are schools that are teaching in the old-fashioned way which was of benefit in the beginning of the 1900s - but the needs are not the same, and we need something fit for the 21st century." This is said by the Head of the Department of Education of Finland.
In the early 2000s, my life was different. My living environment was different. Back then, the first thing that comes to my mind after waking up was to brush my teeth. Today, I search for my smartphone. Its not the same clothes that we wear; its not the same shoes; a lot of things must have changed for all of us.
Inventions and advancements help us to change our environment, lifestyle and even our attitude. We are adapting. We are making use of the inventions and discoveries in the most effective way.
Now, Education is an inevitable thing for a healthy living. No matter where you live in the world, it is very important in the life of a human being. It enlightens us. Life of a person who is uneducated is very tiring. Later in life, it is going to be the biggest regret of his/her life. Well, I'm not talking about degrees or double degrees or Masters or PhDs or Doctorates . I don't think that defines our level of education. The quality of the person should project his level in education. In our schools, we start to study Physics, Chemistry or Biology since we are 10 years old (or even before). Instead of all these we should teach personal values, moral values, and importance of kindness, peace, harmony, unity, and most important of all these, to find their interests. When we do this effectively, we will have refined citizens for our country, it makes them better persons, it makes them live with happiness and contentment which will only boost their productivity which eventually creates this world a better place to live.
Education is underrated. It can be very powerful when used in the correct way. Many of the crimes in our society are done by uneducated ones, but it is also interesting to see the highly 'educated' ones are also indulging in serious crimes.
I'm not underestimating the importance of Physics, Biology or Mathematics, but dont you think building a great person/mind is more important than teaching formulas and equations?
We should give importance to development of personality, character, values, ethics, finding their interest areas etc. in the lower classes. By this, we are creating a platform/foundation for children to think by themselves, find and form their opinions, develop their own value system and most important of all, finding their interests/purpose of their life.
I live in a country where being a Doctor or Engineer are considered the most prestigious career choices. Parents force them to choose these areas. This is the reason why we have a lot of engineers working in banking sectors or non-engineering areas. We should let them find their interests and follow their passions.
It is a happy news that Finland has atleast tried to experiment or find an 'update' to the existing outdated educational system. If this is successful, lets hope this will spread out to other parts of the world and make schools a heaven for children.
